What a way to round out the month… the Polyrhythmics joined me live in the KAOS performance studio for a rousing set of funky global music, including songs from their recent album Labrador and some unrecorded tracks. You may think of global funk as an evening sound, but they proved it works for the morning hours too. Special thanks to Daniel for manning the mixer and making it all sound great!

Youssou N'Dour

Senegal’s Constitutional Council rejected today Youssou N’Dour‘s candidacy for president of Senegal. According to the court, the world music star did not collect the 10,000 signatures that are needed. N’Dour’s organization presented 12,936 signatures of voters, although only 8,911 were validated. President Wade will run again for a third mandate.

In early January of 2012, the 52 year old Senegalese singer announced that he would run for president in February as a ‘patriotic duty.’

N’Dour is one of Africa’s biggest stars. He introduced international audiences to mbalax, a Senegalese blend of African, Caribbean and pop rhythms. His frequent releases never fail to add a new step to Senegal’s extensive repertoire of dance styles. N’Dour’s music is a mixture of Cuban rhythms, jazz and soul flavors, all African in origin. His musicians, some of the most renowned in Africa, play traditional instruments such as the tama (talking drum) as well as western instruments.

Kayhan Kalhor & Ali Bahrami Fard
I Will Not Stand Alone
World Village

Theprominent Iranian composer and musician, Kayhan Kalhor, combines meditative andadventurous compositions on a new instrument—the shah kaman—along with AliBahrami Fard’s bass santoor. The earthy sound of the shah kaman resembles adarker version of the kamancheh, though it is similar in appearance. Thefloating melodies of shah kaman and bass santoor elicit dreamy images ofPersian classical music that is reinvented for a new generation. Keep in mind, only shah kaman and bass santoor instruments are included on this album.Technical wizardry and vocals are nowhere to be found. The interplay betweenthe shah kaman and the bass santoor come to a head on “The Laziest SummerAfternoon.” At times, the music is complex and frenzied. However, it isinterspersed with quieter moments that really grab the attention of listeners. The entire album is about one-hour long with tracks ranging in length fromunder two-...
